Stairlift costs and running costs: build a complete quotation checklist
Stairlift prices: published supplier examples
Affordable Stairlifts published starting prices, not a like-for-like market range or products sold by this site. Model, rail, survey, fitting and extras affect the final bill. Confirm installation inclusions and VAT directly; do not assume VAT relief. Servicing, repairs and removal may be separate. Sources checked 6 November 2026.
There is no single useful stairlift price without a staircase, specification and set of inclusions. An advertised starting figure is not a complete budget for your home. This guide deliberately gives no estimated tariffs: it explains which written figures to collect, how to distinguish known costs from unknowns, and why electricity is only one part of ongoing expenditure.
Define the installed project first
Request a total tied to the model, equipment condition, rail route and included features. Staircase turns, route length, parking arrangements and optional functions can change the scope. Stannah's pricing information identifies staircase configuration and custom features as factors; that is a useful scope checklist, not a market-wide price schedule.
Ask whether the total includes delivery, fitting, testing, demonstration and removal of packaging. Identify preparation work separately, such as work associated with the proposed power supply or an obstruction. Establish who commissions that work and who invoices for it. A phrase such as installation included should not leave the preparation responsibilities unresolved.
Create a cost register with explicit unknowns
Give each item a quoted amount, charging unit, inclusion status and source date. For example, distinguish a one-off attendance charge from an annual service payment. Record the period for which the quote remains valid and whether future renewals can change. A blank amount means you still need an answer; it does not mean the item is free.
Separate cash required at ordering, installation and later renewals. If an initial package includes a service visit, do not count that same visit again under annual maintenance. When comparing quotes, mark differences in scope before comparing totals. Otherwise a more complete offer can appear more expensive simply because another leaves costs unpriced.
- Purchase or rental setup, including the specified rail and chair.
- Preparation and installation work, including separately contracted tasks.
- Planned servicing and any chargeable call-outs or repair labour.
- Replacement parts, batteries and eventual professional removal.
- Finance charges, where relevant, and the stated VAT treatment.
Ask for a defensible electricity assumption
Ask the manufacturer for estimated energy consumption for the quoted model and how it was derived. Establish whether the figure is per journey or over a period, and whether charging and standby consumption are included. A power rating in watts is not, on its own, an annual electricity bill.
Where you have an energy estimate in kilowatt-hours for a defined period, multiply it by your electricity unit rate in pounds per kilowatt-hour for that same period. State the assumed usage and tariff alongside the result. Avoid combining a per-journey estimate with an annual charging estimate unless the manufacturer confirms this will not count the same energy twice.
Budget for maintenance without treating cover as unlimited
A service plan and a repair allowance do different jobs. Read the plan before adding a separate allowance for costs it already covers, and before assuming it covers all faults. Stannah's published service options distinguish basic cover from more comprehensive cover, with different treatment of call-outs, parts and labour.
Ask for the manufacturer's service schedule, the renewal price or pricing basis, and the charges that remain outside the plan. Battery replacement should be clarified explicitly rather than hidden within a general repairs line. If costs cannot yet be quoted, keep them as a risk note rather than inventing a fixed annual repair bill.
Keep tax and possible assistance conditional
Request the VAT rate and basis used in your quotation. HMRC explains that relief applies only where the relevant conditions are met and that suppliers are responsible for checking whether goods qualify. Do not assume age, a product label or another customer's treatment establishes your position. Follow the official guidance and discuss the transaction directly with the supplier.
Do not reduce your available budget by unapproved financial assistance. Record any potential contribution separately until its conditions and approval are confirmed. Finish with a known-cost subtotal, a list of excluded costs and a separate list of unknowns. That is more informative than a precise-looking ownership total built on assumptions.
